Spinach & Kale Breakfast Smoothie

Last updated on February 11th, 2024 at 08:49 am

I started 2014 by turning 30! I thought to myself I really need to start taking better care of myself in my 30’s, more than I ever did in my 20’s and especially after just having two babies back to back. I went back to running every week, getting some much needed fresh air and exercise. I made little goals that were achievable like drinking more water. After getting my CitrusZinger, it really has helped me drink a lot more.

I have never been a fan of breakfast unless of course it’s for dinner. lol I don’t mind scramble eggs on toast or a breakfast burrito for my dinner these days. But to get up at 7:30 and eat a hearty meal isn’t how I like to start my day. Instead I prefer to have my coffee while I feed the kids and then about 10:00 have my smoothie. There are so many different fruits and vegetables you can throw in this but for today I will share you the one I had this morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Freshly Halved Strawberries
  • 1 cup Frozen Blueberries
  • 3/4 cup Natural Fat Free Plain Yogurt or flavored
  • 1 Mini Banana
  • 1/2 cup Cold Water
  • 1 large Handful of Baby Spinach Leaves
  • 1 large Handful of Fresh Kale

Instructions

  1. In a large blender put cold water and yogurt in first
  2. Add your spinach, kale, and strawberries
  3. Pulse a few times
  4. Add the rest of your ingredients
  5. Blend smooth

Recipe Notes

If you add frozen blueberries or ice first some blenders get jammed. Always put liquids in first to help blend smooth.

Spinach & Kale Breakfast Smoothie

I pour my smoothie in my pink Starbucks straw cup so I can carry it around the house while I am doing the morning chores.

It’s a great way to give my metabolism a kick start and it’s packed with nutrients. Sometimes I even add carrots. The berries take away any taste of spinach and kale so it’s just like having a berry smoothie but more healthy. The color isn’t pretty but once you get over that you will love starting your day with one. It really helped me lose that last bit of baby weight I had and now keeps me on my health mission.

It’s no secret most of us aren’t good to our bodies in our twenties but in our thirties there comes a time we need to be a little more aware of what we put in our mouths. Less fast food and more vegetables!

  1. Wow, am impressed. Kale and spinach! Ashamed to admit that I have mine after a full English Breakfast for lunch! Love the way you make this a healthy start and carrying it around with you when you are doing the chores! Afraid I am many years ahead of you and still have to kick that caffiene havit!

    • Ya I gave up caffeine two years ago and haven’t turned back. Don’t get me wrong I drink plenty of coffee still. But always decaf. I am not always good. On vacations its so hard to be good. And I am about to go on a two month long one so I am nervous.

  2. I REALLY want to get into drinking smoothies, at the moment I fall into the ‘no time for breakfast’ category which I know is no good for me. Do you find it takes a lot of time? I think that’s the one thing which puts me off; it looks like a lot of prep is needed. Your recipe does sound nice though!

    • No prep really needed hun. Buy a bunch of fresh fruit and vegetables that you want to make various ones. Don’t do the same ones everyday or you will get burned out. I wash cut and tub them all in the fridge and then each morning just throw what I want in a blender and a to go cup!!! Easy peasy.

  3. No way!!!! I have just put up on my blog a little cry out for ideas to increase my iron – it’s fallen ‘dangerously low’ according to the doctors! I will be trying this smoothie out for sure!! Thanks for sharing. Love the idea too of putting it into a ‘on the go’ cup!

    • Oh yes, I am always on the go. Too many things going on to sit and eat breakfast or even drink from a cup. I pre wash and cut all my fruit and vegetables in the fridge then just grab handfuls and toss in a blender. Walla. Yes do try it all you can take is the berries so it’s yummy and very good for you.

  4. I’m definitely in the not ready for breakfast at the time I’d have to eat it category so I tend to have a yoghurt a little later in the morning but this looks lovely – I’m on a massive spinach kick at the moment so I might have to tear myself away from spinach and avocado salad long enough to make it!

    • It really has made a big difference. My hair and nails are better and stronger and I feel better in myself health wise. You can’t taste them at all and I put as much as possible in my smoothies. About the only way I can be healthy is to not taste it and drink it. lol Try it ignore the color its yummy yum and good for you too.

  6. Yum! My mother makes a kale green drink for her and I each morning before work. They’re so good for you! I don’t think she’s tried it with yogurt yet, good idea!

    • It helps take the taste of kale and spinach away as I am not a fan if it doesn’t have berries or yogurt with it. The taste is too strong for me. It really has helped me be healthier.
