Today it has been seven years since I first stepped off a plane in Cancun, Mexico, with a friend, ready to enjoy a long, beach vacation together. Never did I expect to step off as one person and return another, changed forever.
If you didn’t get a chance to read about the night I met Mr P, click How I got here.
In some ways it seems like I just moved here and in other ways it seems like it has been a lot longer than seven years since I stepped off another plane that would also change me. It’s funny to think so many changes can happen in such a little span of time.
During the last seven years, I have wrote a book, had various types of English jobs, married a brit, moved house, gave birth to two beautiful children, Mr P has build his business from nothing, and I am doing what I love most writing and being a mother. I also recently have hit a birthday milestone, turning 30! Each one of these things made me who I am today and happened right here in this country which is foreign to me. Even though I really struggled to be an expat at first and sometimes still do, it was the BEST decision I ever made!
I don’t tell Mr P that often enough, too many daily, petty things make me comment about home, missing it, longing for the people or the culture or even silly material things. But today as I enjoy our special day, I am reminded this is my children’s homeland, this is the love of my life’s homeland, and this is now my home too!
Having children, a supportive husband and a best friend next door has really made living in this country A LOT easier, less lonely and is my life now. I need to embrace more English things now and again, nothing against all you amazing English readers of mine, you are the reason I have thought of this, to better myself, as you are all amazing. Both of my children are English, don’t I want to be a part of that? YES!!! Of course, I do, I just am so scared of losing my own identity and culture in the progress. I am attempting to find balance now, unite my two homes, as my children have done. After all, I moved abroad for love, love for a man and love for everything that comes with him!!!
Happy Anniversary to us!!!
Coming up next… “Being an expat”… stay tuned!
Happy anniversary Hun, 7 years, wow!! And a very big move too. May you have very many more happy decades together. I haven’t read the post about how you met Mr. P yet so going to read that next.
