A learning space for a school boy

Last updated on April 24th, 2020 at 06:22 pm

September is just around the corner and while we anxiously wait to receive that email (in nine days, who’s counting with me) to tell us what school Buba will be attending, I have started thinking of making him his own learning space.

I think it’s important to have a space to call his own, where he can sit at and work on his studies and go over what he has learned in school. It doesn’t have to be his own complete office, I don’t even have one but just a little corner that is quiet away from the tv and play areas of the house. I am by no means a harper on studies. He won’t have to sit in said learning space for hours upon hours, that’s borderline child abuse. But I know my son and I know that he loves being organized and having something that is all his. I would hope a cool learning space would motivate him to want to learn and focus on his school work more.

Learning space for a school boy

I have been mentioning my first born going off to school a lot lately as it draws closer to the time. While I was emotional that my baby is all grown up, I am now starting to realize, he is SO ready to go to school. If you saw back in December he was already keen to learn his numbers and letters and learn how to write. I was impressed with his focus. At that time, we only had the dining room table to use as a learning space.

It’s no secret I love a good excuse to decorate, style and revamp a room in my house. I have being pouring over new online home interior shops looking for more unique and corky styles to incorporate into my house lately. I do love a good Next or John Lewis purchase but I also like different, unique pieces that not everyone will have. LoveTheSign has just that, their interior decor is full of modern and contemporary styles for all parts of the house that are on trend and very unique. My wishlist from their website could truly reach around the globe.

I was pouring over this very desk below for myself when I got to thinking they have so many great home accents perfect for Buba’s new learning space. I put together this learning space for a school boy mood board to get inspiration from and may have added a few (or all of these) to my growing wishlist too. A learning space for a school boy LoveTheSignI think this learning space would be amazing for Buba to start his school adventures in. It both suits his personality and his bedroom space. I can just envision him sat at this very desk working away on whatever homework his has brought home. I love the corky styles of each piece and think it would look amazing together. It was hard to pick just a few pieces as there were numerous variations to desk chairs I wanted for his space. My options really were endless on what I envisioned it to look like.

This has just turned my sad emotions about my little boy becoming a school boy right side up. I am more excited than ever for him to start school. I am more excited than ever to see him blossom and learn new things each and every day. As a kid, I was one of those students that absolutely loved school. Not just as a youngster but all the way through university as well. I hope that Buba feels the same way and loves to learn.

Do you have a child starting school this September? Are you excited or nervous or mixed emotions like me? Do you have space or thinking of a space for them to do their studies at? I would love to hear, comment below.

  1. What a great set of goodies to make Buba’s learning space a special place he’ll want to go. I love that pencil sharpener pen holder! I’m not surprised he likes things organised with a certain super-organised lady as his mommy 😉 A great way to get him – and you – excited about the big step to school. Fingers crossed you get your first choice. xxx

    • Thanks Jess. I really hope we do get our first choice. I am trying not to think about it too hard and focusing on designing his learning space to keep me occupied. Hahaha

  2. He is such a gorgeous little boy, and that is a lovely picture.. I think that having a little learning corner in the house is a great idea for a little one starting school. My stepdaughter is almost 8 so she has been at school a while now and she still does her homework at the dining table or on the floor because there isn’t space for her to have a desk set-up.

I would have loved to have all of that funky decor when I was a kid!

Good luck with figuring it out, and I hope he gets into your first choice school too.

  3. aww it must be a strange feeling him getting ready to start school but it sounds like he is very ready. I must check out some of the links you have put on. We are moving in the next year and must get my head around some decent decor!! Love the ideas xx #sharewithme x

  4. We have a few years before Eliot goes to school but I can imagine how anxious you are to find out which school Buba’s going to. Love the idea for his own learning space and the pieces are great! 🙂

  5. Lovely idea – my two big kids always to their work together at the table but with the two babies around it isn’t always easy. I am wondering about a high sleeper with a desk underneath for our eldest #sharewithme

    • Oh yes I have been looking for a cabin bed possibly for Bubas room to have one with it too. Not sure if he will sleep high off the ground though. Oh the decisions. Lol

  6. I think you’re right having a space to call his own to work at makes it fun too, it also says you’re doing this and it’s not going away! And he can be like his mum and dad too – I remember my parents buying me my own desk when I was younger and I love it. I think they were motivated by giving me my own space as well as encouraging me to put my things away again!! Hope all goes well and look forward to seeing how school progresses – thanks for hosting lovely x

    • I can’t believe I will have a school boy soon. Yes I had the same little desk for myself when I was little and loved it so much. Hoping it’s the same for Buba too.

  7. I turned one whole room into a study for my five kids. It helps when they all work together. I love your list.

  8. These are great pieces for Bubba’s venture into school! All of them work so well together, and I love how functional and versatile each piece is–it can grow with him through his school years. That pencil sharpener is great and the art work is will be just perfect for his space. Thanks for sharing, Jenny and for hosting another round of #sharewithme

  9. Oh you must all be excited Jenny. It’s such an exciting time and you get to make so many new mum friends too. Every little nativity or Easter play, every painting or Easter bonnet is just so special. I think a little work space is a great idea as it signals that when he is there he will ‘switch on’ to learning. I have always had an area for my son and stuck up all the letters of the alphabet and numbers around it to help him. Good luck with the nursery place…hope you get the one you want. xx

    • Thanks Hun. What a great idea for the wall too. I will have to look for numbers and letters for him too. I like that. Yes I was thinking of making a little cabinet next to his desk to store all the stuff he will bring home from school for him. Lol

    • Thanks Lisa. Ours went quick as Buba only turns four right before school starts so he will be the youngest. So we got one less year than a lot of my friends feels shortened almost. Hahah but he is so excited and ready.

    • I did see a double desk the other day and thought well MM will be right behind him and it might be a great idea to have an area for two already made so they both have a place. Although my brother and I did homework at the table each night and never did us harm. Hahaha

    • Thanks Brandyn. I can’t wait to put it all together for him and get him his big boy bed too. He will have a new room fit for a big boy to start school. I think I am just as excited.

  13. I hate the dreaded wait to see what school they got into! Fingers crossed for you! A little study space is such a good idea and those ideas are just so cute and perfect for a little one! Even a little dedicated study nook will motivate him to sit down and do a little homework when necessary 🙂

    • Oh I like the idea of a little study nook. I am half attempt to claim a room in the house for my own office and give him a corner of his own there too. Win-win. lol I hate the wait, it’s awful not knowing.

  14. Since moving my head’s been full of all the things I want to decorate our little ones’ rooms and their new playroom with – I had a browse on the LoveTheSign site and there are so many lovely things! I particularly love the squish armchairs. But your moodboard is perfect for school learning – which reminds me I really must get a desk for Curly Girl to do her homework on… #sharewithme

    • Thanks Michelle. They really do have so many great things. I would love to redecorate the house just waiting to see if we are moving soon or not. Happy decorating your new home.

  15. I think you should share the space with him, there are some lovely pieces there! Harry started school in September and doesn’t have any homework as such but we do work together at the table. I would love him to have his own space and am sure it would make it more fun. *dons thinking cap*

    • Hahah thanks Rachel. I have been using the excuse for him to have a space but I really could use an office too. So might have to all take over the back room and share it as a work space. Would love to decorate it like this.

  16. I think Z is completely ready to go to school and, hopefully, once he’s settled he’ll probably love it. I reckon I will be the ultra nervous one wanting to cling onto him. I really want to get a little desk and chair for him so that he’s got a little corner, rather than us sitting about on the couch to do any studying! Hope Bubba absolutely loves it too 🙂

    • So true. I think maybe I should make a man cave with this learning space in the corner for a boy corner together. Hahaha then I could send them both in together. Lpl

  17. This is a great idea! As a teacher I really think it is important for children to have their own space to study at home and take ownership of their own learning. Like you say its not so that they can be chained to the desk for hours but it will create a positive atmosphere for learning which will set the foundations for good habits in the future. Oh, and it looks great too!

    • Thanks Hun. It’s great to hear from a teachers perspective on it. That’s exactly what I want to create a positive learning space for my kids.

  18. That’s a such a fabulous idea, making Buba a little space for his studies – I know that Monkey would be easily distracted like his mummy so this is a great tip. I can’t believe how quickly school has come round… I’ve still got one more year, but luckily, Monkey is in the school he will be attending already. Good luck ,and I hope you get the one you really want x

    • Oh me too. I am nervous and excited all at once. Yes I really want him to have his own space to learn and call his own to make it more fun. Positive learning and all. Hahaha

    • Thank you. It was great researching what I wanted his space to look like and getting inspiration. I think this mood board definitely reflects his personality and maybe a little of mommy’s too. lol I might have to borrow his space a few times or two.
