The bathroom is often one of the smallest rooms in the house, yet it is also one of the most important. Our ancestors didn’t have access to bathrooms. Instead, they had to use the facilities outdoors. We are lucky enough to have a bathroom indoors and be able to take our pick from a bath or a shower. Not everyone has a nice, modern bathroom, but if you have the money, it is sensible to give your bathroom an upgrade, as it adds value and makes your home a nicer place to live. If this sounds like a good idea, here are some makeover tips for small bathrooms.
Space Saving Radiators
Bathrooms need heat or they soon get damp. You can achieve efficient home heating with electric radiators, but a traditional radiator takes up a lot of room in a small bathroom. A much better alternative is to use a heated towel rail of the ladder variety. This will keep your towels nice and warm, plus provide a good source of heat during the colder months.
Wet Rooms
If your bathroom is not large enough for a separate bath and shower, consider transforming it into a wet room. Wet rooms are all the rage at the moment. They are super modern and perfect for a stylish family home. With a wet room, you can do away with shower trays, as the water drains away from a drain in the floor. This makes the space a lot easier to clean. The only downside is that a wet room must be installed by a professional contractor – if the room is not properly waterproofed, water leakage will cause significant damage.
Clever Storage
A cluttered bathroom looks much smaller than it actually is, which is a big problem in a room that is already on the compact side. Remove all unnecessary clutter from your bathroom and build integral storage for what is left. Vanity units whereby the sink is built into a storage unit work well in smaller bathrooms.
Mirror, Mirror
Mirrors are very useful if you need a small room to appear larger. Use mirror tiles along one wall to create the illusion of extra space. However, remember that a mirror is essentially glass, so it will need cleaning regularly if you want to avoid lime scale deposits from forming and ruining your beautiful room.
Accent Colors
Light colors work best in smaller bathrooms. This is not to say you can’t go with black marble and chocolate brown fixtures and fittings, but it is not the best look when space is in short supply. Instead, try fitting pale coloured tiles with neutral paint tones on the walls and stick to white bathroom furniture. If you want to introduce some color into the room, buy colorful blinds and matching bathroom accessories.
There are lots of ways to make a small bathroom feel larger than it really is, so don’t feel too despondent if your new bathroom is barely large enough to turn around in. You can still make it look and feel amazing.
