The name “Augusta County” may not conjure up any visions of glitz and glamour, but for young professionals seeking opportunity and a place to start a family to retirees looking forward to a pleasant lifestyle, it has a lot going for it. It’s certainly popular with tourists, but what if you’re thinking of living there? We take a look at the benefits of settling down in Augusta County, VA.

1. Home Prices are Usually Lower than Average

If you’re thinking of buying a home in Augusta County, VA, you stand a good chance of getting more for less. Both purchase prices and rentals are below the national average – but most people buy their homes, and very few rent. Houses tend to be large with white panel sidings, two floors, spacious yards and common housing styles reflect the original “American Dream.” Having said that, you can get anything from an ultra-modern home to a log cabin. Whichever style of home you choose, let your decor reflect the relaxing environment.

2. It’s in the Shenandoah Valley

If you haven’t fallen in love with the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley and its views of the Blue Ridge Mountains yet, you should definitely come for a visit to see why most residents wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else.

But although the entire county has a population of only 80K, there’s more to life in Augusta County than beautiful views, sights like the Natural Bridge, historic buildings like Thomas Jefferson’s house, and a wealth of outdoor activities and country living experiences.

3. Towns, Not Cities

If city living isn’t your idea of a good time, then you’re a perfect fit for Augusta County. But don’t expect any lack of amenities in the towns that fall within its borders. Although there are the charmingly sleepy small towns with a laid-back lifestyle, there are also comfortably-sized towns like Staunton with all the amenities you could hope to find. And although they can get pretty bustling and busy, they still manage to retain some of the relaxed feeling that lets you know you’re in Augusta County.

The population isn’t evenly distributed, of course, the Eastern side of the County is ideal for those who need to live close to schools and town amenities, while the west side of the county is for those who love a more spacious, country-home style lifestyle.

4. Opportunities

Augusta County is in business! Don’t expect agriculture to be the biggest industry like it was in its earlier history. Instead, you’ll find that biotechnology, medicine, and the military occupy the top spots with agriculture following on those. Over a quarter of the people living and working in Augusta are employed in healthcare, but the county is eager to diversify, undertaking initiatives to attract industrial concerns to the area.

5. It’s Conservative – And In the Nicest Way

Leaving politics right out of the debate, American conservatism isn’t a bad thing. Think family values, patriotism, and friendly neighborhoods – that’s right, all the values of yesteryear that are as American as apple pie and which so many people believe are simply dying out in the face of rampant commercialism. If you want evidence that old-fashioned values aren’t dead, then you need to spend some time living in Augusta County. You’re very likely to decide it’s a place where you want to put down roots and call home forever.
