Who doesn’t love a Halloween treat or two? It’s the biggest candy day of the year let’s be honest! Back home you can find tons of Halloween colored candy or our infamous candy corn. Here in the UK, you have to get creative. Since I can’t use Reese’s pieces in my recipes (they would make fab Halloween colors) I went with smarties and just took out the colors I didn’t need.
What To Put In A Halloween Snack Mix
I was going to make a traditional Halloween trail mix with candy corn and pretzels etc. But it’s been done, done and done again. We made Candy Corn Brownies last year that were to die for but we wanted something different and easier for our UK readers to get their hands on the ingredients. I have a slight obsession with things that are sweet & salty at the same time. Anyone else with me? In my mind, that’s what snack mixes are all about that combination flavor.
So I did what any foodie would do and put all my favorites in a bowl together. From Oreo Cookies to Sweet and Salted Popcorn and we coated with something that made it even sweeter and more addictive than just melted chocolate this time. I even added Shreddies just to make me feel like it’s a balanced breakfast if I happen to grab a handful with my morning coffee. Ooops!

Is A Snack Mix The Same As Trail Mix?
Yes and no. Yes in the sense that it’s a tasty mix of foods all tossed in together so you can delve your hand in and come out with a different combination each time. But mostly no, because it’s Halloween after all so I’ve ditched most of the healthy options in favour of candy and sugar and all things naughty.
Prefer A Halloween Trail Mix?
If you wanted to curate more of a trail mix style then replace the Shreddies with granola, add some nuts or roasted pumpkin seeds, and perhaps replace the Oreos with some dried fruit. Raisins or cranberries work will within a Halloween colour scheme. This will give you a healthier Halloween snack while still getting some sweetness from the dried fruit.

Halloween Snack Mix Alternatives
Like all my recipes, this Halloween snack mix is super easy and fast to make. You could whip up it in five minutes or less, and if you don’t like an ingredient then just change it! If you aren’t a smarties fan try Reese’s pieces or skittles. If you like more salt than sweet throw some peanuts or pretzels or both into it too and make it more of a salty Halloween snack. The beauty of Snack Mix or Trail Mix is that you can throw whatever you want in it. I love the icing sugar coated on the sweet and salted popcorn it was my favorite in this snack mix. I might just have to put a tablespoon or two of icing/powdered sugar in my bag of popcorn instead of our usual fruity rainbow popcorn come movie night next time.
