How to pick a Bedroom Style

When it comes to decorating a bedroom you have to think about a few key factors before you pick a style. There is a big difference in styling your master bedroom for yourself to styling either your kid’s bedrooms or the spare bedroom for guests. I thought I would share with you what key factors I go through before working on a bedroom style.

Your master bedroom needs to be comfortable and relaxing. It needs to invite you in and help you catch those zzzz’s we all desperately need. While all bedrooms need this factor, I think master bedroom styles need to be more cozy and warmer than bright and breezy spare bedroom styles need to be.

First, I always envision what would I get out of the room the most? Do you watch tv in your bedroom? If you do, lots of cozy throws and cushions are a must. Do you read in bed? A bright and useful lamp hanging over head and a larger pillow to prop up on is a must. The the key factors are in what you will use that particular bedroom for. Then you can start picking the more cosmetic things like colorful, patterned, duvet cover sets and coordinating or matching curtains.

I always say once you decide the things the bedroom needs in terms of usage, reading, watching tv, play area in kids rooms, a cozy armchair in guest rooms that’s when the styling begins. If you have solid painted walls start with bedding choices first and than curtains or blinds. If you want wallpaper on all walls or perhaps just one wall, always pick that pattern and style first before bedding and curtains. You don’t want them to clash and it’s a lot easier to pick different bedding than it is to pick different wallpaper once it’s up. I think coordinating works better than too much matching fabrics and wallpapers. Having the same pattern on the wall, as the bed, as the curtains makes it harder to change the look at a later date when you want to switch it up. It’s all a bit too much matchy-matchy if you do it this way, in my opinion. If you have gone for a pattern wallpaper, take one or two main colors out of it to accent the bed and the room with. Let’s say it’s patterned wallpaper but all grey perhaps get a solid color that will help it stand out more like pink or charcoal. These colors will compliment each other but don’t have to be the same to match.

Once you settle on what the bedroom will be used for and the main pieces of furniture needed, you have got your walls and bedding decided, it’s time for the best part of styling a bedroom. Bedroom accents. They are one of my favorite things to shop for and my favorite things to move around the house and constantly change. Before I start shopping online at my favorite interior stores or in the shops, I think about the overall theme I want the room to take hold of. Do I want it more vintage, more shabby chic, completely modern or the infamous Scandinavian and botanical appeal. The theme of a bedroom helps you pick out those styling knickknacks that come next on your list.

Vintage bedroom styles will need more mismatched furniture, wood instead of painted. More random books and artefacts spread over the dresser and nightstands. The lamps might be from a charity shop that aren’t the same. Bolder colors throughout the room.

Shabby chic bedroom styles would incorporate more painted furniture, cream or white. Distressed seat bench perhaps with claw feet. Mirrored or glass lamps and jewellery boxes on the dresser. Light colors and more matching floral patterns in the bedding and curtains.

Modern bedroom styles would have stream lines, metal framed beds, solid colors, no patterns in wallpaper, bedding or curtain unless they were geometric. Keep the knickknacks to a minimum like one magazine or book on the nightstand instead of piles of them like vintage bedroom might hold. Mirrors with no frames are a yes.

Scandinavian or Botanical bedroom styles would have plants galore both big on the floor and small on a nightstand or dresser.  Some in baskets in the corner. You might have hanging from the corner of the bedrooms too. Clean and simple furniture lines.  Lower bed frames on the floor, solid colors instead of patterns. Black, white, grey and greenery is usually the color scheme. Wood colored furniture and wood picture frames would adorn the walls.

There are hundreds of ways to style a bedroom. These are just a few key factors I go through when I am decorating one. The kids bedrooms have the same concept just more childish. Will they play in their bedrooms? Or do you have a playroom and they mostly just store things in there and sleep. Do you have family or friends with kids that stay the night? This would need bulk beds or a trundle bed underneath to pull out when you need. You can follow the same tips and advice from above from picking out the furniture to working out the theme of the bedding, walls and curtains. Then the fun begins with toy boxes, vanities, clothes rails, train areas whatever your child would use the most in their space.

I have seen so many people style a bedroom and then regret they didn’t think how the room would be used first. It’s either the tv doesn’t fit now, or I like to read but not good lightening on these beautiful lamps you pay a fortune for. There are so many things to work out before you just pick a style from a magazine and redecorate a bedroom.

So how do you pick a bedroom style?

Easy, make sure it fits your personality, fits what the room will be used the most for, fits the style of the house, and definitely go with your gut. What do you love more about a certain style than another? Way your options between them before you decide. Make sure you went through my key factors in choosing your theme and the styling afterwards will be the fun part.

What key factors or checklist do you run through when you style a bedroom? Do you start with bedding first like most people? Do you think of the overall use of the room first like me? Or do you just go off color schemes??? Comment below…
