letters to my children France editionhim

Buba, we headed off to France this past weekend, and in typical fashion you became very ill. It’s your rotten luck that we always end up at the hospital or doctors with you while we are vacationing abroad. I wish you had a stronger immune system, better luck and less things that keep knocking you down. I will say this, you must have been in horrible pain with a throat infection and not being able to eat the entire time we were there but you still were a trooper. You still found some way to smile once or twice during the day when the medicine kicked in. You still attempted to get up on that horse and ride it at the park. You tried with all your might to play with your friends, and their toys; even if you had to lay down every half hour or so on the couch, too weak to play. I hate that I couldn’t help you and make your holiday better. For the first time ever, I scooped you up in the middle of the night and cuddled you all night while you shook and whimpered through your fevers. It just showed me you can’t plan anything perfectly you just got to deal with what’s right then and there no matter where you are. You were brave with the French doctors and became more yourself again just in time to come home but you got to run around outside and make the most of the last hour or so before we left, that’s what I will remember. I hope that’s what you will remember too! Squealing with laughter, a smile on your face with good friends and family around you.

letters to my children France editionher

Missy Moo, you took France by storm and made one great holiday for yourself. I really enjoyed watching you play with the two older girls, keeping up with them in your stride. You pranced around in your dresses and were running wild through the gardens of our friend’s house. The sun seemed to make you giddy more than normal. I have never heard you laugh so hard, seen you be so happy, and watch you play so hard in your entire little life. It was a pleasure this past weekend traveling with you. Even though we stick to routines at home some of that had to go out the window and you coped so perfectly with it all. You showed concern for your sick brother but you were not your normal jealous self about sharing mommy this time. It was like you knew he really needed mommy cuddles this weekend. You played independently while the older girls were at school. I love watching you exploring and play make believe with the toys in the garden. There was so much space outdoors for you to run and be free and it looks like that’s the kind of thing you need. You are a kindred spirit, wild and free.

  2. I loved what you said about not being able to plan for every eventually and just having to deal with what’s in front of you in the moment. I’m trying to accept that more now that I’m a parent. xxx

    • It was a very proud moment but a sad one too Sarah, I really couldn’t believe how much it looked like she changed. It almost made me cry. Where has my baby gone? Then of course my first born is always sick and usually on vacation we end up at doctors or hospitals, just our luck and his. We always make memories in the end though. Love writing to them each week.

    • She was brilliant on our holiday and really came into her own personality too. It was adorable. B is a lot better now thank you. We are used to it with his bubble boyness, he gets sick a lot and has other ailments that always make it harder for him than others. Bless.

    • I think it was the older girls to play with and the new environment but I was impressed with her giving B the time he needed with me. He was so sick. Bless him. But on the mend now.

    • He was for the most part keeping up with us all. Normally he would just lay on the couch and not move or speak to anyone. So I was very proud of him for sucking it up and we all made the most of it and had a great time. Thank you.

  7. Oh how unlucky, mine are always ill and that is one thing that makes me worried about going abroad. Glad the French doctors were ok. Missy moo sounds like such a character bless her. beautiful letters. Thanks for hosting xx

    • Thanks Katy. Oh dear I can go on for days of how many illnesses one of us has had abroad. Goes with the territory of getting on a plane. It’s not as bad as you think. We have been in most doctors and hospitals in four different countries in the last two years and they are all brilliant with expats.

    • Thank you. I write to them every Monday with a capture photo as they grow and change so much at this age and document adventures we go on and milestones they reach at a time they may not remember themselves. Each year I put them all into a book for them to keep.

    • For once if you would believe I didn’t style that photo the waiter gave her the cocktail umbrella to stop screaming in the restaurant. hahaha So I snapped it up. lol Thanks hunny. B is on the mend and fine now that we are home. Typical isn’t it? We usually have an ill one on vacations too.

  11. Poor Bubba! He’s such a trooper though for keeping up with your family even when we was ill. Glad to know he’s feeling better. Sounds like Missy Moo enjoyed her time, and was so supportive of her brother during his illness. Nothing like a little sis looking out for her brother. Thanks so much for sharing, Jenny. These letters are beautiful!

  14. Aaaw Jenny, sounds like such a mixed holiday for you all. Sorry that Buba was ill, but great that MM had a fabulous time. It’s so hard being a parent, especially if you have more than one and are trying to balance everyone’s moods and feelings i.e. someone being ill vs someone who’s on top of the world! x

    • It seems to be the pattern lately with mixed holidays. But we always make the most of what we can, when we can. I think we all still had a great time. It was definitely a challenge to be hyper and exciting with one child and be sympathetic to the other one. Like playing jeckal and hyde.

    • Thank you Jenni. We could never plan anything without Buba getting hurt, ill, or having to see a specialist of some sorts so we should be used to it by now and more prepared. lol But we still had a great holiday. Helps we stayed with friends and not at a hotel.

Glad to hear Bubba is on the mend now. Bad luck for being ill on holiday, but it looks like he’s a little trooper! I’m sure there’ll be lots more family holidays to come, which he will be able to enjoy fully, and he will still remember the best bits from this one! 🙂 x

  30. Oh Jenny, what an awful and yet lovely holiday. It’s really not nice when our little ones are ill and all you can do is comfort them with a cuddle, is it? Lovely also that you got a little break away from routine with Missy Moo. We also like our routine but it’s nice to see our little bear bloom and shine when she’s doing something off the cuff 🙂
