Let’s face it, we all love the hot weather and when it’s raining and windy outside, we are quickly wishing it away and hoping for the sun to shine and the heat to come in. But when it does, we are quick to moan and this is partly because we aren’t prepared for it. And being unprepared, means we moan that we can’t sleep in the heat, that our living room is too hot to relax in and that the bugs are coming through our windows as we have them open – fly screens are perfect for preventing this!
There is no time like the present to get prepared for the hotter months. There are so many different ways that you can get prepared – you can order in a new fan or aircon system, use blank out blinds and keep them down, to prevent the sun from heating the inside of your home and your bedding needs to change to a lighter tog.
Below is our guide to preparing your home for the hotter months.
Have your fans out and ready
Get your fans out of the attic, dust them down and check they are working ok. When the sun comes, everyone will make a dash to the shop to buy a new fan, so make sure you are prepared, this way you aren’t part of this rush. If you want to take it to the next level, the obvious upgrade to a fan is an air con unit. These will keep your rooms cooler but at an additional expense, as it’s more expensive to run air con units over fans. When you are using a fan or air con unit, make sure they are kid friendly.
Ready your blackout blinds
If the temperature outside your property is hotter than inside, then having the windows open can cause your property to warm up – many people think opening their windows on a hot day will cool their home down, but it’s actually the opposite effect. Instead, you want to put your blackout blinds down and keep them down as this will help stop the sun from shining in. Then when the evening comes and the temperature outside cools, this is the time to open them and open the windows.
Switch your bedding
Getting to sleep when it’s hot is very unpleasant and it is made even harder if you are using your winter bedding. We have a winter and summer bedding set, which we swap over, as the duvet is a lower tog, meaning it’s cooler. Make sure you have a lower tog duvet that you can get out when it’s getting to the hotter months as this will make sleeping a lot more pleasant. If it’s really hot, you may want to stop using a duvet altogether and just use a duvet cover as this is very thin and will reduce your overall body temperature.
What tips would you suggest to someone preparing their home for the hotter months? Have you tried any of the above tips and did they work for you? Is there anything that you think is missing from our guide, that we should be adding? Let us know in the comment box below, we would love to hear from you.
