Don’t know what to buy the kids for Christmas? It’s not always an easy task for some. If you’re like us and don’t watch much TV then you don’t get the input of adverts or suggestions of what the latest “cool toy” is for kids. This makes me and my kids kinda of clueless on what the new “it” toys are.
Each year, we impatiently wait for the Smyths Toys Superstore catalogue to show up at our door. The kids love going through it, cutting out what they want and gluing it to their letter to Santa. They say, “this way Santa knows exactly which toy we are talking about”. They make a whole evening of talking about which one he might bring on their list. We prefer to buy one really awesome toy they want and get the most out of then buying a bunch of little ones.
So what will it be for my three this year….
Trying to sort through all the cutouts for me and know which one they really want and which one they would be most excited about, can be tricky. My daughter can all too easily pick 20 of the same thing on her letter: stuffed dog animals. Yet not know that she might absolute fall in love with something different like FurReal Cubby the Curious Bear or perhaps a Frozen 2 Arendelle Castle to play with when her friends visit.
I know my son being a big youtube fan of Ryan’s World, would squeal at a Ryan’s World Giant Mystery Egg – Gold. He might have to share with his siblings though. They all love his vlogs.
How do you choose toys for your kids? Do you go for the most popular ones?
I always think if I don’t get something for them that’s trending, more than liking most of their friends returning to school will be raving about a top toy they got that I have never heard of.
Here are a few tips to pick the perfect toy:
First, I try to access what my kids already have and then look what’s trending. Is there a new toy out there that will go with an old toy to make it interesting again. Perhaps new furniture for an old doll house or a big lego city to attach to an old smaller town they have built. For example, the trending LEGO Harry Potter The Knight Bus to go with their other Harry Potter LEGO sets. Is there updated dolls to go with the clothes and pram set you already have? It could be as simple as adding a Boppi the Booty Shakin’ Llama to my little girl’s stuff animal farm collection.
Secondly, leave something you think they might like open in the catalogue on the table. See if they say anything about it or comment excitingly about it. Listen to their cues if you do watch tv and see a commercial. I have heard many kids like to say, “I want that” to every commercial so take this one lightly.
Have them write a letter to Santa and cut out of photos of what they might want like we do. Make them star the ones they have a preference to.
I always think lasting to myself, “will they play with it more than once”. It can be easy to buy something just because it’s trending and the new “it” toy. But will your kids play with it with their friends when they visit? Barbie Travel DreamPlane and O.L Surprise! 2-in-1 Glamper Playset would be great ones for my daughter and her friends to do together.
Or with their siblings? My two older ones are close in age so they love a lot of the same kind of toys and can share their toys for playtime. The new Nerf Fortnite AR-E and Push n Talk Forky could be on their top list because at the moment what kid doesn’t love Fortnite and a good game?
Will it be something they run in from school and want to get out and play? For example the PAW Patrol Super PAWs Mighty Jet Command Centre would be fab for after school. My kids have loved PAW Patrol for years and still love watching it with their baby brother at 6 and 8 years old.
We go away for Christmas every year so I always have to plan ahead and have Christmas decisions made. I love Christmas time it’s my favorite time of year. I love the magic in kids’ eyes in everything from going to visit Santa, the Christmas markets, snow, family visiting, carols, and the big, jolly day, it’s self too!
