In most cases, it’s cheaper to buy used than brand new. Cars, furniture, appliances, clothes and gadgets are all examples of this. However, there are a few cases where the opposite is true. Certain things can appreciate in value over time or may simply gain value simply by having a previous owner. Below are a few examples of things that you can generally save money on by buying brand new.
Property
If you’re looking for cheap property to buy, a new build could be a good option. Nowadays, there are a growing number of house and land packages that are typically much more affordable than buying an older property of the same size.
They are a particularly good option for first-time buyers as there are many first-time buyer incentives that may only apply to these properties. This includes grants, shared ownership schemes and low deposit mortgages to help reduce upfront costs.
It’s worth noting that new properties can also come with cheaper running costs. Most of these properties are built to be as energy-efficient as possible, saving you money on your energy bills. On top of this, such properties don’t experience the wear and tear that is common with older properties.
Collectibles
When it comes to collecting limited edition items like toys, books or vinyl, you’re typically better off buying them brand new as soon as they are released. These collectible items can often increase value over time because of their scarcity, which means paying more to acquire them. Some investors may even deliberately hoard collectibles to drive up the value.
In other words, if you want to get your hands on a limited edition item, you shouldn’t wait to buy it at a later date. Once stores stop selling these items, you could see the prices of used ones going up.
Art
Art is something that can often increase in value over time. Even a cheap local painting has the potential to appreciate over time. This is because paintings and sculpture are usually one-of-a-kind and so therefore have an automatic rarity. Over the years, they then become more valuable as they also become pieces of history.
If you’d like to buy an original painting or sculpture for your home, consider buying it from the artist themselves to get the best deal. It’s worth noting that not all art appreciates in value and that you can still sometimes find decent old paintings for a low price in antique stores and charity shops.
Website domains
Thinking of launching a website? Before you begin planning your site, you may want to check that your ideal website domain is available – and, if so, who is selling it.
A website domain that has never been used before is likely to be available for a very cheap price. Previously-owned website domains are meanwhile likely to be a lot more expensive. This is why it’s worth being creative when choosing a website address – the more obscure the address, the less likely it is to have been already bought up. You can buy brand new websites through a website registrar.
